Wet Carpet Drying and Water Removal in Plano, TX

Wet carpet can often be saved. The pad underneath usually can't, and the subfloor below that needs drying either way. What decides it is how clean the water was and how long it sat. We extract water from carpet and pad, replace pad where needed, and dry the carpet and floor in place, so you're not paying for new carpet you didn't need.

Can Wet Carpet Be Saved?

Carpet wet with clean water, like from a supply line, ice maker or water heater, can usually be dried and reinstalled if drying starts within a day or two. Carpet soaked by sewage, toilet overflow with waste, or storm water from outside should be replaced, because contamination soaks into the fibers and backing.

Why Carpet Pad Usually Has to Go

Carpet pad acts like a sponge. It holds far more water than the carpet above it, dries slowly, and sits directly on the subfloor where moisture lingers. Pad is also inexpensive compared to carpet. In most water losses, replacing the pad while drying and reinstalling the carpet costs less and works better than trying to dry soaked pad.

Signs Your Carpet Is Wetter Than It Looks

  • The surface feels dry, but it squishes when you step on it
  • A musty or sour smell, especially a day or two later
  • Carpet that looks rippled, loose or lifting along the wall
  • Brown spots or rings appearing as it dries, called wicking
  • Baseboards that are damp or swelling at the bottom

Wet Carpet? Do This First

  • Stop the water and turn off power to the room if water is near outlets.
  • Lift furniture onto blocks, foil or plastic so stain and rust don't transfer to the carpet.
  • Move rugs and anything on the floor out of the room.
  • Don't walk on it more than you must, which pushes water deeper into the pad.
  • Keep the AC on to pull humidity out of the house.
  • If the water was dirty (toilet, sewer or outside), stay off it and call.

How We Dry Wet Carpet

  • Find the edges. Moisture meters show how far water spread under the carpet, often well past the visible wet spot.
  • Extract. Water comes out of the carpet and pad with extraction wands, then weighted tools that press water out of the pad. See water extraction.
  • Decide on the pad. Soaked pad is cut out and removed; the carpet is folded back.
  • Dry the subfloor. With the pad out, air reaches the concrete or plywood underneath.
  • Float or dry in place. Carpet is dried from both sides with air movers, or left in place over the dried pad when the pad was salvageable.
  • Dehumidify. Dehumidifiers pull the evaporated water from the room; see structural drying.
  • Clean and reinstall. Once readings show dry, new pad goes down and the carpet is stretched back into place.

Why Does My Wet Carpet Smell?

A sour or musty smell usually means the pad or the subfloor beneath it is still wet and bacteria are growing. Surface drying doesn't fix it. The smell usually stops once the pad is replaced, the subfloor is dried, and the carpet is cleaned. If the smell keeps coming back, water may still be trapped under the floor or in the bottom of the walls; moisture mapping can find it.

What Is Carpet Delamination?

Most carpet has two backing layers held together with adhesive. When carpet stays wet too long, that adhesive can let go and the layers separate. Delaminated carpet looks wavy or wrinkled and won't stretch flat. That's one of the main reasons wet carpet gets replaced, and one more reason drying needs to start fast.
